Lasius niger in a local garden to me stocking up on some protein Lasius brunneus in a ancient piece of woodland feeding on some honey. The tree is an Oak.

Beautiful! I take it that the first pic is a bit of bone? Yes it was a piece of chicken bone thrown out. The workers were coming from a nest I observed at least 25 years ago. Amazing if its the same colony.

As Lasius queens can live for a long time, over 30 years in some cases, it is possible that the nest is still the same colony with an old queen , as I am certain this nest would not take in a young queen even the old one died. Love the photos, very clear and sharp.
