I ordered a colony of 80-100 workers plus 1 queen from British ants on Saturday evening and they turned up today so this will be a new journal on these. I have never kept them or this species before so keen to learn and the best way is experience. So they arrived very quick today, packaging was ok and they came in a glass test tube. Not much water in the tube and a lot of workers are dead. I have not counted the colony but there does not seem to be as many as 80-100 workers. I'd probably say there is around half that alive and at least 20 dead workers. Also I can not see any brood at all but they are very small and seem to pile onto each other so they maybe hiding it. I have covered the tube and I may give them a few days undisturbed to let them get their bearings before attempting to feed or move them around.

They look very similar to T. nylanderi in size and colour. Have you seen the queen yet?

These have taken some honey and have eaten a dead gnat but I have not bothered them much I wanted them to settle. I have seen a very small pile of eggs or larvae. They are still in a test tube, I have ordered some bit and bobs to hopefully move them to another test with some more water and provide them with a small outworld. I see some people mix this species with other ants but I have no plans at the moment to do this, but it would be interesting to maybe see how they got on with a Camponotus.

Well these have escaped from a test tube somehow and I am gutted.

Well these have escaped from a test tube somehow and I am gutted. This can be a problem with very small ants, and if the entire colony has escaped there is little chance of finding them.
