I've always loved this species so it was inevitable I'd try again. This colony of a queen and 50-100 workers was ordered from Ants Kalytta and (Hopefully!) won't take too long to arrive. I've always kept them in soil nests in the past but this time, I'm trying a different strategy- I splashed out on one of these acrylic formicariums from Anthouse.es, which is also on its way. I've never tried one of these formicariums before so it'll be a learning experience for me. I'm going to be finding it hard to wait with three ant species on the way! As always, comments and feedback are more than welcome.

I kept a colony of Myrmica in the same nest and they did fine, just remember to keep the oasis pads damp but not too wet.

Curse the lack of post on Sundays! I suspect the Pheidole and Temnothorax will arrive on Monday but I can hardly wait that long.

They've arrived! A rather large colony of at least 100 workers with many soldiers and a healthy queen. Lots of brood too. Now to wait for their acrylic nest to turn up.

Thank you! I gave them a cricket a little while ago and there's not a lot of it left. The soldiers have very distended gasters, suggesting they've been well fed. This larva refuses to let go of the cricket leg she's chewing on! The queen is practically buried under her brood most of the time. She's clearly been busy.

The postman has been and no acrylic nest in sight...I was banking on it arriving by now as this colony is very hard to feed. There is constantly a large group of them at the cotton just waiting to get out as soon as I try. Got an e-mail from Anthouse.es asking me to review it. Bit hard if it's not here yet!

They don't come in the post, he uses a courier which I think is GLS.

The Pheidole queen has been busy, judging by this pile of eggs. Unfortunately, she is very skittish and shies away from any kind of light when she isn't buried under her brood. I was unable to get any good photos of her today. Disappointingly, the acrylic formicarium still hasn't turned up. I really hope it arrives tomorrow so this colony can finally move out.

Just so you know, I recently ordered an acri nest from anthouse. The first time I ordered it took days this time however it took 2 weeks. Just giving you the heads up incase you need to make temporary arrangements while waiting for its delivery.

Just giving you the heads up incase you need to make temporary arrangements while waiting for its delivery. It's been 11 days so far. Hopefully I won't need to make any arrangements, because I know I'd screw it up. Much safer to wait for the nest to arrive so I can just put the test tube in and leave the colony to it.
