26/01/18
Today was the day I ventured back into the world of antkeeping, ordering what will most likely be the most challenging species I've yet to keep - Solenopsis Invicta. Though I'm not home until March to actually view her for myself while at uni, she will be looked after by my family until I return.
29/01/18
The queen arrived in the post today with no seen brood. She was placed on a heat mat in a shelf in my room alongside my Lasius Niger and Messor Barbarus, who are all housed in test tubes for the time being. In a sense, I was relieved the queen did not have any brood; I had read about the explosive growth of this species.. though I was naive enough to think it would be over a month before her first workers would arrive.

I asked my Mum if she could check up on the colonies for me today, this being the first check since the queen arrived to avoid disturbing her too often. All 3 queens share a portion of the heat mat, with 2 queens having brood, but as you may have guessed.. our Solenopsis Queen had her first 5 workers already (who knows how long they've been around for)! It's quite astounding to think that an egg to worker can develop in under a month.
They have been fed a fruit fly and a drop of honey, which apparently they were very interested in, and I suppose weekly feeds are in order now for this colony as they grow and grow more rapidly.
I can't wait to return home in March to see all of this for myself! Hopefully pictures will be then too.

I'm interested to see how this colony progresses! Was tempted to order a queen myself, but this species does too well and I'd have escapes on my hands.

It's going to be quite a challenge! I already have a formicarium lined up when they outgrow their test tube. The thing that worries me most is finding a sustainable way to feed them since their appetite seems to be endless :x

After a bit of research, it seems Dubai roaches is the best way to go for an easy to keep, efficient, feeder food source. I'll look into sourcing a place to buy some from, and hope they'll be a good food source for the ants ^.^.

We don't see this species for sale as much as Sol geminata, so where did you buy your queen if you don't mind me asking?

We don't see this species for sale as much as Sol geminata, so where did you buy your queen if you don't mind me asking? At the time of typing this, there are at least two S. invicta colonies (One of which has two queens) available from British Ants, alongside S. fugax.

I regret to inform everyone that when I arrived back home yesterday, every member of the small colony was dead . They had unfortunately been placed directly on the heat mat and the water supply had dried up. Luckily none of my other colonies suffered the same fate, but all are without water now. Next time I will have to give more detailed instructions on how to care for my ants while I'm away. Maybe I should start a journal on one of my other current colonies?

Sorry to hear that UKantz, I was looking forward to seeing your journal updates progress from really pleased to positively alarmed as the colony rapidly outgrew their set up! Do you think you'll try again?

Most likely TenebrousNova, its one of my goals of ant keeping to successfully keep this species, and their care shouldn't be too difficult in theory. Will probably wait until the prices drop from BritishAnts before trying again though
