I found a Lasius brunneus queen today in my garden being attacked by around 30 Lasius niger workers. I am gutted as I have been keeping eyes to the ground for the past 3 weeks to find one and when I find one she is at deaths door. Both the lower half of her front legs are missing and both antennas are also gone. Ill keep looking for another one but It looks like I have missed a flight today. Weather has been warm, humid and some sun/cloud. Now its pouring with rain and thundering so no chance of finding anything else today.

I kept the queen in a tube and today she has come back to life walking around and even laid an egg. Not sure how long she will last without any antennas or even if she will be able to raise the brood. Seems unlikely. Maybe I can salvage the brood for another queen if I find one. Yesterday she was looking dead ob her back curled up but somehow she is alive now.

Without her antennae, wouldn't she be "mute" when trying to communicate with other ants? Not something I've pondered before.
