I found this rather interesting bit of research done by the Nature Conservancy at the Furzbrook Research Centre in Dorset, which was where Doctor M.V.Brian, the eminent English entomologist did so much of his work. It concerns the density of queen numbers found in wild nests of Myrmica rubra www.jstor.org/pss/3136
