hehe thanks wood do you know anything about L.Fuliginosus? e.g flight times and how rare in britain I've never seen these ants before I=only read about them in "Ants" by Gary J.Skinner and Geoffrey W.Allen very good book all about English ant species

Next to Lasius flavus and niger, fuliginosus are fairly common to many parts of East Anglia, the Midlands and southern counties of England. They are less seen in the west, so you have had a good find there nest mate Newly mated queens are usually found in July/August, but they usually start their colonies by becoming a temporary social parasite of Lasius umbratus, so it may prove very difficult to find them and begin your own colony
