Where I live (northern Portugal, near the coast) there used to be humungous swarms of flying ants by this time, haven't seen them in a few years. There are still some , but not as much as before.

Up here in Scotland we had a huge thunder and rain storm through the day and again through the night, but I haven't seen any flights yet.

Saw one dead queen today, but nothing much else here. I am away for the next 4 days, so I'm hoping they hang on until I get back!

As I type this, the huge Lasius niger nest in the back garden's yucca bush is swarming with hundreds of workers and alates, many of which have already took off (Or got caught in the spider webs cunningly wove right above the nest). Indeed, I have just had to shoo a princess out of the room who flew straight through my window. Odd that they should fly right after the hot and humid days. Maybe the cloudiness down here is helping.

I'm down in Windsor for a few days, and there are hundreds of L. niger queens all over the floor outside my hotel.

I would love to, but don't have anything with me to put them in.

Now 2014 a year on from previous post. I'm waiting for the flavus to fly, but no sign of them making any movement here despite it being a scorching day.

On tonights weather, they're giving out hot humid conditions from Wednesday. Just the ticket for flights

I saw some Lasius brunneus alates this afternoon, they still are not flying though. Thursday looks promising

In the North West we've already had one flight from the L.niger nests, but when I checked on a nest today they had even more winged alates ready for round 2!! Also, I finally found a Myrmica rubra nest and it had a few winged alates.

Still haven't seen any flying ants in the north east yet. Beginning to think that there are no ants near me.

The flavus queens are still busy roaming around under the big stone in my garden. No sign of them flying, I have counted about 10 of them. They will get consumed back in the nest if they don't hurry up and find the right moment
