Near my home is an old brickworks which has been abandoned for years now. Its a good place to go find Lasius niger in particular. Here are a couple of pictures of nest chambers found under 2 of the thousands of bricks that litter the area. Note that I am finding a lot of winged queens and males still so there might be more nuptial flights to come! A huge amount of cocoons found under this old brick

nice photos, I bet you could boost a small captive colony from a newly mated queen with a few of those cocooned pupae
