I found some very nice ant pics from a guy named David Young, and I'm hoping I can talk him into either posting them here or sending them to me so I can post them. They're very nice macro photos....he really does a good job!
David agreed, and here are a few pics he's taken....they are of an Aphaen. fulva I believe.
Those are some lovely photos, but I'm confident they are not A. fulva.
However, no one could be blamed for misidentifications in this difficult group. There are numerous undescribed species, most reliably separated by chromosomal features, though there are in fact some subtle morphological features,too. And there are no serviceable keys, even to the described species.
A Canadian myrmecologist Gary Umphrey is working on them, but his full time job as a statistics professor slows down his ant work terribly.
