Could be they're not getting enough warmth, Wood. This ant lives in the part of the U.S.A. that have a rather hot, humid summer. Daytime thermal maxima from mid June through late August where this ant lives are rarely below 30C, often much hotter in July-early August.
Try a heating device and a liberal supply of vitaminized sugar water.
