That's really interesting how Queen Two is treated like a worker and does the same tasks they would. I often wondered what unmated queens do when they remain in the nest and aren't killed, I mostly assumed she would sit there and let the workers do everything for her. It sounds like the Red Queen and workers accept the unmated queen because she pulls her weight around the nest and isn't a drain on their resources. Did the killed queens behave in this way? they killed Queens, No they was fated up by the workers then after a week or 2 I think the worker ants throw them out of nest,
After so long in foraging tank the workers then turned on them after so long but the personality of the queens was like they was stressed as in wanted to be out and away like they know they only had a short time before colony would turn on them.

It seems to me that they are busy dismembering their lunch in order to reduce it to "bite size"/"chew size" pieces. It's not really their lunch –– it's a veritable Ant Banquet! Kind regards, andavane

Hello Shane, Thank you very much for creating such a detailed journal with wonderfully detailed photographs. I am interested in getting a Messor Barbarus colony and so I am doing as much research as I can until such a time that I can get one. I remember reading early on in your journal that you had issues with the ants escaping, do you still have this problem now or have you mostly resolved it? Also, do you have any updated pictures of your ant set-up? I am curious to see what yours looks like before I purchase my own. Finally, what seeds do you find your colony prefers? Thanks again. I can't wait to hear more about how your colony is getting on. .

Maybe a well late reply but Messor barbarus will almost eat anything, Which makes them a easy colony to rear up. Best seeds to use are mixed canary seeds small sunflower seeds, Cooked chicken or any sort of cooked bird meat and any insects there not to fussy.

Log: 23.02.2021 ============
Though out winter, colony has been slow, Not many in foraging tank and lots in nest living on seed reserves and active but slow.
Colony in foraging tank seem to be busy with taking in seeds and taking out seed, Shells and dead in to bin zone.
Queen seems fine always in bottom left corner and her works like in a small swarm balls keeping her warm though cold spells.

Nice to see that the red queen colony is still doing well and looking healthy. I love the major red headed workers. ❤️
