Hi there,
I am going to be ordering a big tank and a bunch of stuff from that "antstore.net" site and I am thinking I will get a queen Messor Barbarus. If anyone has had them could you please tell what kind of experience you had with them? Also some sites I have read say that they should have some sort of heating and some sites say they don't need one so your thoughts on that please would be great.
Cheers

Hi Icewhyte, welcome to AHW. You are best to take a look around, especially at the Journals boards on the front of this forum. Loads of us are keeping Messors and so you will find numerous posts on this species, far too much info to repeat here Follow the links below} Members JournalsWood's JournalsThey don't need a heat mat most of the year, depending where you live. The room needs to be kept frost free, and the chill taken off the room in the winter. I keep them in my bedroom, with just a low oil heater on at night during the cold months. They do like to dig, given the opportunity for this type of nest, they will make a large colony. You will also find Wood Ant has done a species profile on this ant, which can be read on the profile board

Also check out the Ant Species Profiles board, as you will find it contains a lot of really good information on many species, with Messor barbarus and M. structor included

I had a look at them. Very interesting, the barbarus and structor seem very similar. Does this go with all messor species? The place I was looking to buy them are sold out but they have Messor cf. capitatus, anyone encountered these? If so, how do they compare with barbarus/structor? Cheers

Oh aye, cheers.
That place is a bit more expensive so I will wait to hear about an arrival date from ANTSTORE first and if its going to be too long I will get them at the place you recommended.
Thanks

Ant Store does have a bad reputation for sending out live ants in very poor condition, arriving late or even dead on arrival I can personally recommend Ants Kalytta for their ants and service if you want to buy healthy colonies
