Good luck when you get your new colony. When will you be getting them, before or after Christmas?

I'm hoping to pick them up, so it could be before Xmas, well thats what I hope to do anyway. if not I'll ask them to wait till after before posting.
and I may try feeding grape to just a few workers other than giving it to the whole nest.

I washed the grapes before feeding them to my ants, so there wasn't anything on them and I fed them to F. fusca, L. niger and M. ruginodis, in all cases they died after a couple of feeds, so I did my research and found that grapes are in fact poisonous to a lot of animals, as is mint. Although, again, if the ants are using the grapes for fungus growth, not feeding directly from the grape, I'm in the dark! Hope this helps clear it up a bit Nathan

Any fruit you see wasps feeding on is usually safe for ants, as they are closely related. So plums or cherries, apples and pears should be fine; but I find fruit goes mouldy after 2 or 3 days and needs to be removed quickly. Also some leaves can be poisonous, so you do have to watch what you pick and wash them first to remove any dirt and bacteria. Then remember to wash your hands as well, as you don't know what little nasties may be lurking around on your skin these days Merry Christmas folks

woo good news I've now got my new nest ;D I may start a diary what do you think? Some ant keepers find that a diary is useful, and you can of course open a journal here on the forum which anyone who is a member may also read

I keep my temperature at about 26oC but as long as its above 22oC and below 28oC they are still able to build the fungus, but if the temperature is at the lower end they don't seem to build as much or as quickly. To be honest by looking at the rate which mine have grown I don't think that set-up would last a great deal of time lol.
