This colony turned up today from Antstore. They are a lovely colour and glow in the sunlight. I have just taken this photo this afternoon These are big ants compared to what we normally have here, they are also very active. The Queen has already replaced some eggs that were lost in the transfer.

There are more pics of these ants in the Ant Photo Gallery, which do show the queen. She is laying eggs, while her workers are busy digging and collecting food
I had loads of fun yesterday when I got this colony in the post. They were sent in a test tube which had a piece of kitchen towel placed inside it. I put the tube in the fridge for 10 minutes, which did calm the ants down; but on opening the tube by removing the cotton wool bung, and then having to pull out the paper towel with Jenant's modelling tweezers, plus get the ants from the tube into where I wanted them (an AntWorld transparent foraging pot with lid); the ants started to wake up and become active once more
I managed to get the queen, with a number of workers and brood safely into the pot, then quickly closed the lid to avoid loosing any. Too my horror I found that 7 workers ants were still in the paper towel, and now were running about Jen's kitchen worktop
As fast as I caught one or two and placed them into the set up, then went to catch more to put in the top of the AntWorld; I found that the ones already in there were charging out again. One girl even stung my finger, and their sting is worse than a Myrmica rubra for the pain factor ( it hurt like hell ).
Eventually I succeeded in getting them all into their home after 10 minutes of chasing them around Jen's kitchen ;D Oh what fun- perhaps not!

It wasn't a case of him hurting the girls, but more the girls hurting him ;D They are lovely ants though, big and a rich ruby red. Also very fast and very clever from what we've seen up to now

I would have loved to have a Manica colony, my 1 queen I captured never produced. Although really wood, the sting of the ants you've had is nothing to a sting from a Pogonomyrmex occidentallis worker.... ;*)

Very pretty ants Although Formica ants hurt a LOT and thats just being bitten on the knee from them...think of how much they hurt if they bit your hand or something (OUCH)

Sadly, after beginning this year by laying some new eggs, this colony slowly went downhill until only the queen was left alive; and today I discovered that she had died These girls were great diggers, and I am saddened at their demise

I had forgotten about this thread until Wood placed it here. Members can post on all topics in this board by the way.
