A few weeks back I took some photos of some wild colonies, while photographing a Formica sp of ants. here is a Myrmica rubra colony that was under a rock another colony, under another stone Just to show you how easy it is to capture colonies of Myrmica rubra, can you spot the queens. A few weeks back we had some snow. The ants had already come out of hibernation. During the cold spell I found a colony of Lasius niger living behind some wooden beams holding up an embankment by a canal. They seemed to be trying to warm themselves in the sunlight, it was a very cold day.
