14.7.09 quick update it dawned on me the other day that I may have put just a little too much soil in. (sorry the a great pic nor does it help being taken just after spraying) but you can also see under the yellow plastic that is now in there, they dug a big chamber (about the size of my fist) but it had no fungus in it but was open to the garden so I covered it over just so I could moisten the soil. they really must be growing now as the amount of food they are taking back to the nest is getting more and more as each day goes by ;D and they reall seem to like home grown cabbage.

14.8.09
The population is steadily increasing and the fungus garden now stretches form one end of the tank to the other by the looks of it, or they have build 2 fungus gardens.
at the moment they really seem to like sycamore leaves and are going through 4-5 a day so they are more than likely going to want a change soon.

population seems that it has exploded over the last week, as well as the fungus. but for one reason or another they have been bringing fungus up from the nest and keeping it on the surface and even in the tubing, fungus on the surface again a bit of fungus in the tubing. could it just be that they have kept making fungus without building more Chambers to put it in? (I really need to get a camera)

You can use bramble leaves as these are still on blackberry bushes in winter. If the old shoots are put in water, they will even send out fresh growth with new leaves on them I have transferred this into the journals Kyle, and hope your colony continues to do well, as I do enjoy reading about them

All is going well, about 70-80% of nest nest is in the new container, and I'm quite sure that at least one of the queens is in there, but a small stubborn bit on the nest will not move out.

quick update as I've not done it for nearly 2 months. Still growing very well, even with the limited types of leaves, but bramble is still a firm favourite, and is taken over everything else. Lately they have seem to developed a hatred for anything made of wood, mainly the ramp they use to get from the foraging tank to the tubing, and try chewing it, as interesting as it may be to watch the lid is made from a wooden frame but so far no signs of them chewing at it yet lol.

woo Spring is finally here and the daffodils are going down a treat and nest activity has really shot up in the last 2 weeks, and the amount of brood I'm seeing look like its on a steady incline ;D weather or not this has anything to do with an increase of food, or just the tank is warmed up a bit more than it normally is (as it is only in the evening that the brood are visible) (come to think about it, it could just be it's draker in the evening so they don't mind the brood being there )

ok got to make this quick as I'm posting during an IT lesson, and my home Internet is playing up, anyone else who's with Sky having there Internet playing up?
Anyway, colony is still growing well, a good number workers in the foraging tank during feeding, depending on what it is, just waiting for the first roses to come out ;D, There must be some serous nest expanding going on in the nest as well is they mound has raised by a good 10 cm in the last few days.

After last months cave in, things are now back on track. The last few week they have become quite picky in what they've been taking back to the nest, even rose leaves were left the other day, so I decided to try giving them some fruit as I hadn't do so in quite a while to see if I got a better response, Within just a few minutes of putting an Orange in, there were workers pouring out of the nest Within about half hour bits of orange were clearly visible I've also been told that "fruit is not for the insects up there, its meant for us" lol, but where theres a will theres a way They've also decided to build/take some fungus back into the tubing again, which I still can't work out why and me brother getting bitten lol, but he offered so...

Ok sorry I've not updated this in about 3 months, I've been rather busy with bits and bobs, and a local archery tournament ;D ;D which I didn't win came 4th (need new bow) any way yabbering 27.9.2010I can more or less clean out the nesting tank now, as they have moved into the foraging area temporarily, leaving the old tank empty of fungus, just a few stragglers left to move. As far as feeding goes, they have become much less picky, weather that has anything to do with the fact that food is put no more than 20CM away or not I don't know, but almost everything that is put in is very quickly dragged over to the fungus (with out being cut if they can help it) and start processing it straight away. I know I've not updated this in a while, but certain things took priority, and I still can't use the PC anyway by the way everyone have a good bonfire night 07.11.2010I've was finally able to get a new soil to replace the heavy stuff, which also holds moisture much better (humus brick), they've not been eating as much in the last week or so, as they've been moving, and re digging the nest etc etc, but all seem well, as they are slowly returning to normal.
