Beautiful looking colony, Phasmid. The fungus looks like it's doing excellently too.

Love the photos, and the set up looks really interesting. At least the large container pots are not opaque like most are that are sold in the shops, as being almost clear you (and us) can see some of what the colony is doing. I assume you have a foraging area outside of the set up where the workers can cut leaves?

I assume you have a foraging area outside of the set up where the workers can cut leaves? Wanted to use glass or acrylic containers for the nest boxes, but they were hard to find and quite expensive. So these containers will do the trick, despite not being completely clear. There is a 30x30x30cm foraging tank on top if the enclosure, you can see the bottom of it in the second enclosure pic.

Leaf Cutter species are always fascinating to watch, which is why so many zoos keep them. Lovely clear photos Phasmid.

Thanks Jenant. I think almost every zoo I've been to has had leaf cutters, although they are always an Atta sp.

You are getting really good taking nice close ups Phasmid. The recent ones are great of the fungus garden and the workers cutting leaves.

Wow! Would love to one day keep a leaf-cutter ant colony myself. Is this species hard to keep?

Love the pictures , and as to anyboys question any leaf cutter species is hard to keep regardless and are also very expensive so you would want to get it right the 1st time. The reason for this is because they are a tropical species with some very fussy traits, like the correct humidity, temperature, space to live in, food ect.

Wow! Would love to one day keep a leaf-cutter ant colony myself. Is this species hard to keep? Acromyrmex species are considered to be easier than Atta, but it isn't the ants that are hard to keep in captivity, as both Acromyrmex and Atta are tough; but it's the fungus that requires the right conditions to grow and survive, as both humidity and temperature must remain at a fairly constant level. If the fungus garden doe well, then so does the colony of ants, regardless of the species.
