Fantastic set up Adam. I am currently building a formicarium from acrylic tube and have had to modify part of it as I was trying to stick acrylic to a type of nylon (total failure) so have acquired another acrylic tube to replace the nylon one. What adhesive did you use to glue yours together?

Hey Kerno , if you look at the previous posts you should see it linked , replied to Deansie with a small list of supplies I used.
Hey Deansie, as of yet my acrylic pipes for the fungus gardens have no ventilation holes occasionally condensation forms on the inside but the ants are quick to drink it up.

Are the colony enjoying the new style set up, and did they behave while you were away on holiday Adam?

Hello Wood , yes they are indeed , I have had to take down the long foraging rope though due to falling ants ha ha. While away they managed to get out lol , came home to a small line of ants. Quick dust pan and brush and placed them in my new feeding area ha ha. Will have to update soon : )

Hey guys , I haven't been around here past few weeks due to being away on holiday in Wales and my leaf cutters and other things were left to my nan to take care of. My Atta cephalotes had a major blow during my time away. While the weather was cool in Wales it has apparently been extremely hot here in midlands, my nan trying to be helpful decided to open my tropical greenhouse door to vent some of the heat. She apparently did this several times while I was away unknowing to me until I came back. When I arrived back on Thursday 17th I walked into a boiling hot humid bungalow which was not pleasant , the horrorfying fact is my bedroom was hotter, the ants were going crazy , the foraging area was filled and the acrylic containers alive with movement , the shocking thing was the temperature of the set up which was 37 c The queen was moving around madly and the workers were all over her and trying to drag her through the queen excluder, I quickly grabbed the queen chamber off the set up and blocked of the tubing while my friend vented all the bungalow and I moved the queen container into my bathroom where it was extremely cooler, I blanked of the window and ran the shower with cold water which cooled the air down more, being mostly tiled with one small window the bathroom is the coolest room in my place. Slowly the temperature in my bungalow dropped but it wasn't until about 11.00pm Thursday night that it was safe to move the queen back onto the set up. Friday afternoon I noticed the queen lying next to her garden , she was lay there not moving , Saturday she was on her side and then her back and its now become apparent she has died. As of yet I'm not sure what I am going to do, I may get another colony in the future but for now I'm going to keep this colony while it lasts and then see from there. Its extremely sad and I have loved keeping these ants and watching her colony grow. I cannot blame my nan for she didn't know she was doing wrong. I just wish I had come back a few days earlier now. Adam

Really sad to hear this Adam We have had extremes of heat, with thunder storms this past week, I think Friday was the hottest day so far. A real shame, and the fact they won't except another queen is the trouble with keeping ants. It's a great pity nan didn't open up the bungalow too, it might have helped.

Thank you Leafcutter, I may get another colony not sure yet, Thank you Jen , my nan didn't open my windows , being a bungalow and my windows rather wide I think she was worried someone might climb in or something, she feels bad but I told her it not her fault, You can actually re queen Atta's but its complicated and involves adding more and more of the colony slowly.

Very tragic news Adam, so sorry to read this. You wouldn't think that Atta would suffer from the heat as they come from countries like Brazil and semi-tropical forests where it does get very hot; but I suppose the humidity and air flow were not enough to reduce the baking temperatures. And to think we can get so hot here in Britain nowadays. Talk about global warming, I don't remember such baking summer heat when I was a kid.

I know , it didn't help my bedroom is connected to my tropical greenhouse , four walls of polycarbonate and one small vent basically turned my bedroom into a sauna Adam

That's really sad to hear Adam, you must be really cut about it. I've had to put bags of frozen peas in my garage set-up when it's hit the 28 degree mark to bring it back to 26 degrees. Again sorry to hear that mate
