While I am not sure what the name of this species of beetle is, which Jenny and I came across in our local pasture just 2 miles away; I believe it to be one the various dung beetles or Scarabs, which were part of ancient Egyptian worship?

It actually called a Dor beetle witch is basically a European dung beetle. Quite correct It is actually a beetle which goes by the name of Geotrupes stercorarius. A common dung beetle, noted for its bumbling habit of colliding with walkers on warm summer evenings in open fields. It is also known as the Shardborne Beetle, Dumbledor, the Clock, and the Lousy Watchman. The last of these names is given to it on account that it is often covered by tiny mites which infest its entire body, poor thing I actually found this useful information in a book called The Complete Guide to British Wildlife, published by Collins in paperback.
