Jen and I have just returned from a very long walk across the South Downs up past Goodwood horse racing course. Bobby, our older Lhasa Apso was soon puffing and panting, but it took ages before Katy was worn out. However we all enjoyed the walk and it was Kate's first major exploration of the wilds of Sussex. The number of butterflies we saw was amazing, as there were hundreds of all colours and sizes. Goodwood Country Park is a real haven for wildlife, yet sadly we didn't see so much as a single foraging ant at all.

After a great deal of thought and discussion, we decided to make a long trip over to Carmarthen in Wales and buy another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy as a sister for Katy. The journey was long and a bit tedious, but she came home with no problems considering she travelled about 200 miles, and Bess plays with Katy very well even though she is half Katy's size. So meet Bess, who is 8 weeks old today and is a Tri-colour with a lot of playful fun in her and a very strong little girl for her age.

I've just cooked a chicken, chaos is all I can say. I had the 3 of them queueing up behind me like hyenas

What does Bobby make of the new arrival?

At the moment Bobby is doing the same as he did with Katy in the beginning, he retreats and runs when Bess (the new pup) goes near him. On the whole he watches them both rough and tumble, we'll get there in a few weeks. At the moment I am running around like a headless chicken in the morning trying to get a routine going. Katy can get a bit rough in play as Bess is 8weeks and Katy is 16weeks, but it might be me being too cautious and call for half time on them......

At the moment it is bedlam having 2 little girls around the place, although they do very much enjoy playing together; but sometimes it gets a bit rough. Bess loves chewing on pigs ears, though if she gets near my bare feet then my big toe is fair game and her bite is quite hard. She definitely has the Welsh stubborn streak and determination even if she is the smallest member of the family.

It is a rare sight to see our old boy Bobby put up with the 2 girls in his bed, but today he couldn't be bothered turfing them out of it as he was too tired.

Yesterday we bought a big dog bed, even all 3 dogs can fit in it! Arriving home, we found Bess 13wks old tri-colour Cav to be wincing in pain on piddling and had passed a small amount of blood in it. Whipped her to the vets within the hour, to be told what we had suspected, a urine infection or (Uti). She was given a steroid/pain relief injection, and a weeks course of antibiotics. £55 later, she is bright this morning and back to playful herself. I hope there is no more suprises up the sleeve. The vet said puppies need to develop more, and are prone to infection as the urine can back up in pockets and create bacteria. I just wish they weren't so expensive, £31 consultation fee prior to medication.

Our 18 month old Staffie suffered a lot from cystitis when she was much younger, which sounds very similar- an infection of the urinary tract, and there was also some blood. She was constantly trying to urinate and it was upsetting her a lot, but she's fine now. Hope Bess is alright.

Bess is back to her rebel self, she seems more active than she was before I hope it doesn't happen too often at that price!

Katy, our older Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy does not seem to drink water very well. So after trying her with milky tea or just milk, we read that a vet had advised another person with the same problem to try offering very diluted blackcurrant squash. This has worked, as Katy will now drink water with a drop of fruit flavouring added.

Katy, our Blenheim Cavalier has reached the age of one today. We have just taken our tri-colour Bess to the vets as she has developed an eye infection, so has been given antibiotic gel for this. It cost £45 so we will not forget Kate's first birthday in a hurry; and to top it all Bess has now come into heat for her first season. And they say it's a dogs life

Now they are older, I can't get away with anything! They know body language, time of day, when we are going out etc.. They work each other up, so if one doesn't get what they want, they play each other up until one sparks off and I give in It's totally different behaviour as a pack to when we only had the 1 dog. Picking up my handbag, means we are going out, and they are being shut behind the baby gate in the kitchen (they do not want to know). Taking my glasses off, and shutting the Tablet away in its bag, means walkies no matter when it is. Coming home from shopping, means we have a carrier bag full of chews and chicken. Dogs, who'd have em!
