I have decided to try to start yet another Messor colony, my first try ended in a fail after hibernating them in my shed, my second attempt went even worse and ended with no workers left alive. I do still have the queen but she hasn't laid for months now and I believe its a matter of time before she dies.
So here goes my third try!
10-6-14
I received my queen that I ordered from queen ant shop, I must of miss read as I was expecting workers but there were none, there are a large number of larvae and a nice size clutch of eggs in there with a lovely red headed queen who is very active. I covered her test tube with foil and have put her on the shelf above my Atta set up. I will move her tube to a tub when the first workers appear to make feeding easier.
I'll post some pics when I get home from work too.
Fingers crossed third time lucky. Mark

Judging from the size of your queen's gaster, there's probably a lot more eggs to come! Good luck Mark.

22-6-14 Upon checking the queen this morning I noticed her first worker has appeard. I have put seeds in and a few dead meal worms as well as honey. I'll also drop some chicken in too this afternoon. Mark

26-06-14 Sadly my little worker has died the queen still has lots of life in her and a few more ants are beginning to enclose now, along with a large pile of eggs and a few larvae so fingers crossed. Mark

I have had an odd experience with my Messor workers. I had around 10 workers in November and more than half of them died off between November and now but there are still four workers. They are pretty old workers. How old was the worker that died Mark?

Yet again, I checked the colony this afternoon to find they had moved test tubes finally but sadly the queen was dead. I do not understand what the hell I'm doing wrong, they have seeds, water, small pieces of chicken and sugar water. They were kept at room temprature in a dark box where no one had acsess to disturb them. Maybe I'm just not meant to keep this species. Really annoyed about this but I will try again but I think I'm going to put them in a dirt set up this time.

I do not believe this, that is both a shame and annoying Joona.
