We have been checking on a L. flavus nest under a stone in our garden, and it was filled with dozens of new winged queens and males, which shows that the local flavus nests around us have still got some pretty big mating flights to come. They have had more flights than the local L. niger this year, so evidently the flooding from the winter didn't affect the nests too much

Well I have just lifted up a big stone at the edge of our path in the back garden. Dozens of winged flavus queens milling about underneath. I went back with the camera, and blow me they vanished, typical I will never learn. I shall be watching and waiting to see what this nest does during the next few evenings
