Found it, they were from Queen Ant Shop which has now sadly gone out of business as I think James moved away from London and went abroad? yes that's the one that's missing and cannot think off

Queen ant shop is still open, it's online, active and there are several different colonies still advertised for sale along with his formicariums and other supplies I have just been browsing it now
Unless I'm seeing things?

This is what I'm able to see, there are 4 species alone in the Europe ant species and messor babarus in the Southern Europe section.

Yes, I only see that page with the M. barbarus too. James was hinting at moving away some time ago, so he hasn't been restocking his site.

So sad to read that this fight between queens took place Shane. There maybe some hope if a new queen emerges, let's hope so

Never once they tried to escape there foraging tank that been open all year around. Never went past the oil or tried, Kept close to queen and never got bitten by them.

So sorry to read about your queens fighting to the death Shane, but that photo of the major on your finger is brilliant.

Regarding the eggs being carried around in this colony, if you are sure that the queen is no longer alive, then any adult ants from these eggs will become males as workers haven't got fully developed ovaries and don't mate like a proper queen. The fact that winged males are appearing in the nest shows that infertile eggs are being laid, so the eggs the workers are now carrying (not laid by a mated queen) will all become males and not workers.

Worker ants can lay eggs, but as they cannot mate the eggs are infertile as Wood has said.

Yeah the males have died off, No queens but was interesting to see what happens in a dyeing colony with no queen and it seems when workers lay odd eggs and last of them if any workers are still alive feed them up to be males to leave nest for last time.
