Are the ant world's good for keeping ants in or are they no good as I would probably buy one if they are good because they are cheap. The image I put in didn't work so here is a website that sells them. link

We have kept ants in these a lot over the years, they like them but you have to go for the medium size ants and not your large species. Also, you need to leave out the central plastic scenery, so the ants have more space. They put this in to appeal to small kids, but it's not necessary. A pipette is supplied for water, but a plant spray is easier. It's a cheaper answer to the glass uprights, which can be heavy and cumbersome and take up a lot of room. Tesco are the cheapest usually, have a look in an Extra store if you have one, as they are sometimes in stock.

Yes, there is a Tesco extra not to far from my house. I was hoping that the scenery was removable and I am glad that it is removable and I have a plant sprayer as well.

Just don't put the scenery in, as it comes in pieces, as you have to snap it all together.

For something that is nice and cheap to buy from most Ant World sellers, this add has got to be the biggest rip off ever. Very expensive Ant World sellerI don't know anyone who would pay such a ludicrous price, as even the makers sell it for about £12.

The buyers actually paid £19.99 each (which is still a rip off) but the £99.99 is what a company does when they don't have any stock. Instead of cancelling a listing they just change the price to something silly so no one buys it.

Back on topic. Any worlds are great for medium sized species such as Myrmica or Formica but use a different outworld to what it comes with and don't keep it in constant sunlight and rather covered

When I do get one I was going to use the containers that the ants are housed in at the moment as they will last as foraging arenas for a few years until they outgrow it and need a larger foraging area.

If you find a colony starts to get overcrowded in an Ant World Josh, you can add on more simply by using a length of tubing; but they will hold a lot of ants before they get full, and only fill the soil level just over half to allow for nest excavation.

I got one of these second hand, very cheaply on eBay and would definitely recommend them. I used it as an extension to my Lasius niger colony's initial set up. They've begun moving in but it will take a good couple of years until they outgrow the Antworld extension. I have to say that my ants do have a habit of squeezing out of the various joints and air holes but it's simple enough to plug up any gaps with blu tack!

I am now definitely considering getting one or two of these for my Lasius niger colonies but I will wait till they outgrow the nanitic stage so it is harder for them to escape.

I used the green AntWorld's for several years when I first started my seriously ant keeping. They are extremely good for beginners and children. The thing I liked about them was that they were cheap, easy to assemble, quite rigged and you were able to attach more then one together. What I didn't like about them was that the plastic sometimes became fogged or scratched to easily preventing a clear view of inside, and sometimes they are not escape proof.

To be perfectly honest, the Ant World is a cheaper alternative to buying a more expensive glass upright formicarium. Myrm has pointed out the good and bad points, and I have found that the set up does get a little scratched on the clear plastic panes from the ants moving the soil or sand around. Very tiny ants less than the size of Myrmica can escape, but for ant species such as the smaller Formica, Lasius, Manica or Myrmica, the set up works fine; and as I am currently keeping a new colony of L. niger in one, none of the nanitic workers have got out, as it does depend on making sure you put it together as tight as possible.
I did keep a colony of P. pallidula in one some years ago, but it did involve putting sticky tape over the air holes, as although these are very small they were not stopping such tiny ants from squeezing out. If your plan is to keep larger medium sized ants in them, then they are great.
