Okay so I've got good news and bad news...the bad news is that there have still not been a nuptial flight...
The good news is that I've found a small ants specie in the yard that doesn't need nuptial flight, they just take a queen and a few workers and start a new colony elsewhere...which eventually link up with the mother colony...
So my little brother accidentally knocked over a rock in the yard and found at least 4 queens and dozens of workers...and there are plenty of these rock with the same result...the queens only come out at night...I guess its because the surface is then warmer than deep down...
okay so now, as a beginner, its good for if I fail the first time...(Which I don't plan to do)
Now I've bought my fish tank (not the round one as planned) and the normal sand I used from my yard (I've dug under to get the moist ones) but whenever the ants dig the tunnels collapse...so without me having to go get soil from a florist...can I maybe wet the sand a lot and leave it for a few days so that it dries and the sand hardens?

If you wet the sand too much it will just collapse, and does it really need to be hard?

If I look at the way the sand is in the yard...its pretty hard...I couldn't dig that deep with a showel cause it was so hard...and they seem to like those conditions...I've found out its a very common "Pharaoh Ant" specie. So...I maybe just want to try and see if its works...something to add to our experience. But has this been done before? And how many days would you think I should wait before introducing the ants to the formica aftet wetting it? Good thing about it is, I have time to waste, to test and ect.
