I ordered and have now received a 2nd 'Camponotus ligniperda' colony from Ants Kalytta as a 'back-up' just in case my original colony fails however the queen looks distinctly different, to my eyes at least, to my first and I'm wondering if perhaps they are 2 different species. can anyone help me out with this?
The new queen is on the left.

The left is definitely ligniperda, the one on the right is smaller and lacks the red colouration of ligniperda, perhaps she is Camponotus herculeanus?

I think you may be right. At least I got ligniperda in the end I shall raise both colonies anyway to see what happens with them.

Gerhard Kalytta knows his native German ants well, and although 1 queen is a bit smaller than the other, both are definitely C. ligniperda (sometimes named ligniperdus). Like many ants from this genus they can be slow and calm, and brood development growth seems to be very slow but does with time and some extra warmth. www.antwiki.org/wiki/Camponotus_ligniperda

ok thanks wood, though the first queen I got, the one on the right which I got earlier this year, was from Ants UK. The 2nd is from Ants Kalytta.

That explains why the one on the right is smaller then, as ants UK send out younger smaller stock. Gerhard on the other hand sends quality stock of good size, that's probably why his prices reflect that. Ants UK have even been known to send out a different species to what has been ordered.

My second viewing of this video makes me agree with you Bugman, I now think the smaller queen is a herculeanus as you posted. My apologies, but it seems you are correct with your identification. Sorry to you both, as I did not know the first queen came from AntsUK who have been known to make mistakes in species of the ants they send out.
