Would you pay £85 just for 1 queen with a bit of brood? I know we love to buy exotic ants and they can be expensive for a colony, but I thinks this guy is ripping buyers off. Open this link £85 Queen AntI would say that any ant keeper who pays this much for a single queen of any species wants their head tested.

Very expensive!! I would not pay, when I get more enjoyment from a free Lasius niger Queen from the mating flights. And I thought £30.99 was bad for a colony of Pheidole pallidula with 30 workers!! I know Atta's are expensive, but I understand that.
Each too there own!!

It's about supply and demand as well because if there's demand for exotic species but little supply, then people would be prepared to pay the premium price. Just have to be careful of eBay sellers anyway.

I miss that, makes it even worse!

I completely get your point guys. I cannot lie, If I really really wanted the species and he had decent reviews and was the cheapest seller around I would be tempted. Most I have ever payed so far is £150 for my Bullet Ant Queen but to me that was a bargain considering the rarity. The commercial ant Nests are pretty steep in my eyes. Sellers like Deansyme are a credit to the entire ant keeping community. When I joined this forum I was shocked at how affordable his colonies are. I suppose If the colony brings you many years of enjoyment then its a good investment (if it fails-not so good)..well its a cheaper hobby than drinking or smoking anyway Colonies on my most wanted list: Camponotus gigas Camponotus fulvopilosus Myrmecia pavida Pachycondyla apicalis All sadly are available at extortionate prices.

Well said Occultus. When you put it like that it does make sense that even at high prices, keeping ants is at least a far more healthy hobby than smoking or spending money on booze, as both are a waste of money, although I used to do both in my teens and 20's as back then in the 1970's it was "the done thing"; but the money saved by not doing them now is a lot, and ants don't pose a health risk like smoking, so if you get several years of enjoyment from them this makes buying them a good investment. We try to make sure that ant sellers here are reputable, sell good ants, and come highly recommended by other ant keepers and keep their prices down, which of course Dean is one of our best.

I guess the usual EBay sellers will be doing the rounds soon too, selling thousands of caught Queen native UK species for silly prices?!

I guess the usual EBay sellers will be doing the rounds soon too, selling thousands of caught Queen native UK species for silly prices?! Yes. Avoid them like the plague. Buy only from reputable sellers. We are lucky enough to have very reliable ant sellers here among our members, who being reputable and tried and trusted, I can personally vouch for as selling nice ant species which are healthy; and are also friends of mine such as Dean and Peter who do their best to keep prices as low as they can while still supplying value for money. Now that Dean has opened his web site things should improve for UK ant keepers to get some interesting ants, and to get all the formicariums and other ant keeping materials and foods they require. I wish him the very best for his new venture and hope he does really well, as I do know he loves ants and will offer great customer care in the service he provides.

Around 5-6 years ago I used to sell Niger, flavus and any other UK species on eBay and after a while eBay told me I was no longer allowed to sell them on there. So I don't know how they are getting away with selling them on eBay. Shame really, I used to sell a lot of queen ants and small colonies on eBay.

They are sold as live food for insects I believe.

Tried that too and in the end after serveral emails back and forth to eBay they threatened to ban my account! So in the end I had to stop.

How long ago did this happen?
If it was some time ago perhaps eBay have relaxed their "live food" rules.
Was it definitely eBay and not another ant seller pretending to be eBay to get you to stop selling them so it was less competition?

Yer was def eBay, they removed the listings on serveral occasions. Just on eBay browsing and there is not one live ant on sell now. They must of got very strict on this for some reason.
