I eat my words as 2hours on, I have just been out with the dog and niger queens, they are crawling all over the footpaths, I was dancing around them as not to tread on them they look lost and bewildered, and don't really know which direction to turn

I was out cleaning my car today and managed to catch 2 Lasius niger queens. I went into my back garden and saw quite a few mating flights. I also saw a drone mating with the alate. were all over my pavement. Saw many fertilised ants in the grass too. Have set up 2 in antworlds. Hopefully they will do ok.

I found 4, and it took a 3 hour search! Yes, 3 hours non stop walking and looking on the ground. It paid off eventually, and found 1 fertilised queen AT LAST.

Hi 54321ade,
Welcome to the forum; actually digging up queens in the anting world is frowned on. This is because the chances of you finding one by digging and disturbing a whole colony is remote. More harm than good is done with this method.
It is best to lift stones and look underneath, and at certain times you will even see queens, wandering about in the warm sun during springtime. But you still never take all the queens as you deplete the wild, for future development.

No need to dig up a nest when you've become a good ant hunter, as I've become over the past 45 years! The chances of finding a single L. niger queen among thousands of angry workers is virtually nil; and I have never, ever had to dig up an ants nest during my entire life as an ant hunter. I don't want anyone getting back at me on this, and making this a controversial thread; and I am not trying to start a heated debate either! I am however, just stating my opinion on this matter
