Probably have done this before? So... who has the oldest/longest lived and I suppose the biggest, colony in their possession with alates included and everything!? I only have a little over two year old Lasius niger colony. Possible up to 150 - 200 workers at a guess. The Queen was from the mating flights of 2013, I got the little colony March 2014 from AntsUK. I'm sure we can do better than that!

My oldest colony is the Silver Tank Messor barbarus which I got in September 2008. I have had other ant colonies that have lasted for many years, while others did not live that long; but in terms of being long lived and growing into a colony of several thousand workers from just a single queen, you can't beat Messor barbs as my Q2 colony started from just a single mated queen and is now one of my biggest ant colonies. I also got my Formica lusatica colony back in 2008 from the sadly demised Antsectopia store here in the UK, and again they have only only 1 queen, so being a polygyn species I often wonder how large a colony with 3 or more queens would grow to, as this species also does well in captivity.

I've had my Acromyrmex octospinosus since January 2009, and after a bit of a bumpy beginning and a few other problems, they are now well and truly thriving with well over 5000 worker and still growing quickly.
