While you will find nests with winged ants in them in May, no British native ants fly before June; and most don't fly until July or August, even in the south where it might be warmer. Our native ants fly mainly on very hot sultry and humid days usually after heavy rainfall the day before.

Also do not give up, I'm not in Britain so I cannot say for sure when. They fly but this is what I know as far as nuptial schedules from my small research. (Keep in mind I'm just getting into this so take it for what its worth) the below pictures are from a video I watched which told me when to suspect the nuptial flights hope it helps ^ aprox. schedule for North America
^ aprox. Schedule for Europe image upload gif

There's a Lasius niger flight going on right now! I was mostly on the lookout for Lasius flavus, so I didn't collect any queens today. I did find a few dead ones though, which my Pheidole colony is feasting upon. And if anyone happens to spot Myrmica queens when they start to fly, I'd be willing to buy some.

So far we have only seen 1 single queen flying today, but as tonight is supposed to have heavy thunder storms and rain, perhaps tomorrow may see a lot more flying ants?

I like to pick up the queens and slyly put them into flower pots in hopes they'll nest there. I don't think my mum would be very happy.

BBC Breakfast TV channel was talking about flying ants this morning, but we still haven't seen a major mating flight here. I think this could be due to Virgin Media who have been laying fibre optic cables all along every road in our area, as many ant nests have been dug up and disturbed, so may have had their winged females damaged or killed by all the digging?
