I am in the South of France at the moment and I have seen lots of species of ants so far. Here is a short video of a wild Messor barbarus nest near where I am staying.

It is my last day in south France and since I have been here I have seen lots of different species of ants without looking for them. I know they have a lot of species here but I didn't think I would see as many. So far I have seen Formica both red/black and black. Crematogastor sharing a trail on a Maple tree with Lasius brunneus Messor, Camponotus and a really small Lasius species maybe Lasius lasioides.

Red and black Formica I expect are wood ant species, most likely belonging to the Rufa group. Here is the list of ants found in France. French Ant Species.

You seen any nuptial flights? I'm in Cyprus at the moment and small flights take place every night. Alates seem to like bright lights near windows.
