Just at a nearby woods and have seen a tree stump covered in flying ants. Looks like Lasius umbratus. Not seen them fly this late in the year but it is very warm today.

Lasius alienus ( Link here) flies in late September and into October, so it is possible that L. umbratus may be flying later than usual.

I will keep an eye out for them but I would be surprised if I see these now. Definitely parasitic species flying earlier, I did pick up a queen to take a look, large head small gaster. Workers were yellow like Lasius flavus but larger. A nice find as I have not seen this species fly from a nest before or seen anything fly this late in the year.

There's a big Lasius niger flight going on at the moment. No signs of flavus, as usual.

My flavus flight happened after 7pm in the evening, but I didn't collect any new queens. If I'd known you guys wanted any I might have picked up a few, but I will probably have to wait until next year unless we get any more this year.
