She hasn't got any brood,I think this isn't the best set up for her,the substrate in there does not allow her to dig,it's mainly sand with a little soil, because of her being shy,I'm aiming to set her up in a nateral setting with the right substrate, plus more wood and stones to create lots of dark hiding places, she has always behaved like this, obviously she isn't totally content with her situation otherwise she wouldn't keep eating her eggs,so I've got to find a way to make her more happy.

My Queen is eating a lot lately going through two medium sized Black crickets a day,she has also started climbing on the side of her enclosure and jumping off onto the grass, this is a behaviour I find surprising as I have never heard off her species jumping, she shows no shyness as she will do this behaviour while I'm in the same room, but as I've said before somewhere on this forum I always end up with crazy not the norm pets.

I've just ordered some organic bee pollen for both of my ant colonies to see if they like it,hopefully they will.

I have downsized my Queens enclosure,I have put her in a soil nest with her bit of wood, the enclosure itself is darker, hopefully she will enjoy this enclosure much more than her old one,and it may encourage her to start laying eggs again.

Good news after downsizing my queens enclosure,I put half a locust in for her this morning only to see in her usual spot on her wood, she turned her head enough for me to see she was carrying eggs in her mouth, quickly as I could I placed the cover back on her enclosure and left her in peace, these are the first eggs she has laid this year, obviously her smaller darker enclosure has done the trick of making her feel more secure, she has got soil loam in her enclosure but still she chooses to nest in her wood and on top of it not underneath it like before.

Again there is no sign off her eggs despite her feeding on the locusts I put in,unless she has placed them somewhere else on her wood, and I'm not prepared to lift the wood up to look,so it looks like I have a ant that doesn't really want to be a queen.

I was dismayed to find a few patches of mold in her substrate, especially since her enclosure is not a moist one,I would get more springtails, but I feel the springtails wouldn't thrive in her enclosure,so I need to re-thick her living environment, she seems like she doesn't want to dig a nest,so less substrate more stones and wood,I'll make it as close to a forest floor environment with little to no soil.

I added a few more decorations to my Queens nest/outworld,now she has a new favourite spot to hang out,as soon as I put the new things in she didn't hesitate in investigating.

To my horror I went to check on my Queen earlier today, only to discover the little minx has escaped, the last time I saw her was yesterday when she had filled up on cockroach, any ideas how to catch her would be appreciated,I will have to empty everything out of the room to find her,I'm so worried she may try to get in to my other ants.

I gave her enclosure a closer inspection and found her dead next to the head part of the cockroach,I'm not sure what happened,I think she was injured by the cockroach,it was my own fault really these cockroaches were far too big and I've just read that they can bite,my other Queen didn't even bother trying to tackle the head end,and just went for the other half and the wings and she is fine.

Sorry to hear this, it's often the case that live insects do fight back and cockroachs do have powerful jaws as they can eat almost anything. I always crush the head on any insect that may bite, or kill them either in boiling water or by freezing. I have just locked this journal and moved it.

Even crickets can injure or kill ants. I'm sorry about your loss.
