Over the last 2 days we have been seeing thousands of flying ants as they mated from 6pm to 7pm. Jenny picked up a few of the newly mated queens, as there were hundreds wandering around our estate within a few minutes walk away. I haven't seen any Lasius flavus mating yet, but they will be soon as we have plenty of nests nearby.

I'm going to be collecting a few when it happens over here... I did think I saw one queen yesterday while out at the farm.

Lasius niger mating flights have been happening the last two days where I am (Nottingham). I collected three queens. I am excited to keep them right from the beginning.

There's an enormous one going on in Portsmouth right now. Hundreds of queens as far as the eye can see.

I kept 2 queens together in a test tube and they laid a lot of eggs. Then some of the eggs became larvae and cocooned pupae. Today I see the first worker has been born, and I will keep the 2 queens together until more worker ants are born, and then I will separate them with some brood and workers each unless the dominant queen kills the other or the workers do.

These ladies now have 4 workers today, so I'll have to consider making a journal for them and what to do with the colony when they outgrow the test tube.

Unfortunately the little first workers have died leaving the 2 queens together to raise the rest of the brood. So I won't be moving them into a nest anytime soon unless they get more workers.
