I know how badly my garden is in need of rain, but I have also noticed that the current extreme hot weather is not doing the local ant species much good either. Normally both Lasius flavus and niger are flying in late July and August, but I haven't seen any of them yet and the drought shows no signs of letting up, with temperatures climbing to over 30 degrees Celsius and clear skies and baking hot sunshine. I will keep an eye out for the rest of the month and see if anything happens, but the lack of water is affecting both plants and the local wildlife very much, and hosepipe bans are now in place. I'm glad to see that my neighbours are not having barbecues as they are a real fire hazard in this situation. I would put out a bowl of water for the bees, birds and butterflies, but the heat evaporates it so fast that it can only be left in a shady place. I just hope it rains soon as I'm fed up with the heatwave and its effects on my garden and the wildlife.
