my carpenter ant queen passed away...ah well, it was my first shot and I wasn't surprised with the outcome. the only thing to do now is clean up and try again. Always keep your chin up I say!

That is a good philosophy to take Bilbo, as ants give you all sorts of surprises good and bad

I've found that Camponotus (carpenter) ants are very tough for first-timers. My first ant queen, Camponotus pennsylvacus, died after laying her first batch of eggs. They seem to lay and develop brood extremely slowly, which I find rather annoying.

An easier ant for beginners would be a Lasius species. A few species of Lasius are still flying!
