They live in cool fresh water, Jenant. Naturally native to two mountainous lakes in Mexico, Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. Lake Chalco no longer exists, having been drained by Humans to prevent periodic flooding. Lake Xochimilco still exists, but is a diminished glimpse of its former self, now existing as polluted canals. So unfortunately the Axolotl is endangered in the wild and introduced fish to their habitat don't help (Killing of babies and food competition). Luckily, they are easily bred and can be found in pet shops. Amphibians did arrive on the Earth millions of years ago, and Salamanders- particularly Axolotls- do have their little mysteries.

Just the one, called Medusa. Had her for just over three years now, they have a lifespan of about 15 years or more. I have been thinking about giving her a companion Axolotl to keep her company, but I'm worried they would bite each other as adults can take limbs off each other. Limbs regrow in a matter of months, but Medusa has been alone for a while now and probably wouldn't be very friendly to a new face in her home.

I fed Medusa this evening, but figured I would photograph her before she starts to make a mess everywhere. ;D She gets really excited when she sees me coming with her food: She's a lovely creature, and I don't know what I would do without her- she's my companion and I often spend time sitting with her, whereupon she comes up to me and will happily sit with me for ages.

During the week, I'm going to pay a visit to a Axolotl in my local pet shop. This one is an albino, and a male to my knowledge. I might buy him as a companion to Medusa. I'm only worried that she might be spiteful towards him, since she has been kept on her own for a few years and is used to getting my attention. He is kept with other Axolotls and is used to their company. I'll have a look at him and if he's as big as Medusa, I may get him. I'll have to see how they get on though, since she snaps at anything that moves in the vicinity.

I did not get Medusa a companion, as she would probably be too aggressive towards him. Here she is, saying hello.

Timenova she certainly is a beauty! I have a young male leucistic named Nanna he is almost a year now and is also very lively and comes swimming to see me when I enter the room! They certainly are intelligent however the majority of Axolotls are lazy and mainly only walk around their tank rather than swimming.
I would love to hear if you still have yours and if she is well as I too know very few people who keep them.

As I type this she has swallowed an air bubble and is now floating around her tank with the current. Got any pictures of Nanna? The only reason I haven't bought Medusa a companion Axolotl is because she's been alone for four years and I don't know how she'd react. Didn't help that I saw a young gold-albino at the pet shop the other day missing one of his back legs. We've been renovating the back garden with lots of new plants, so we've found plenty of earthworms for her to eat.

Glad to hear I love it when they do that, it is so amusing to watch . Yes, well it is usual easier to introduce 2 older axies as when they are young they are more playful and nibble on anything that moves Oh dear, but luckily Axolotls have regeneration abilities and can easily grow a new leg in a few months time allowing he is well fed and cared after, he certainly would have a story if you decided to buy him! I have attempted to add a picture of him, not sure if it has worked tho ...

Thanks Wood, my boy has a staple diet of earthworms bought from ebay but now and again he can be treated to bloodworms and daphnia. I prefere earthworms as they are the cheapest for me and Nanna prefers his food still wriggling

Nice looking little critter Bumblebee. What do they eat? In my experience, anything meaty. Especially, as Bumblebee says, if it's moving. Nanna looks great!

Whilst volunteering at the pet shop a man dropped off his axolotl because he didn't have the time to look after her. He wanted her to go to a good home and the shop manager was willing to give her away for nothing. That's where I come in! I was worried at first about Medusa because like I mentioned before, she isn't used to the company of her own kind. She nipped a bit at her new companion but is now getting along nicely with her.
