I admire your courage for picking her up. I wouldn't, especially after hearing about how strong those jaws are.

Mine are docile As long as there's food already in there foraging tank you can pick them up even though I can't put a hand in there or they will swarm up your arm . Have to use a stick for her to wander on with out others following. Anything new next to them, they will investigate and that's if its a stick with no ant scents on .

The video compliments the photos in your journal nicely, and super-majors are often less aggressive than their smaller sisters so less inclined to bite.

I think you're feeding your Messor barbs so well, that is why they are having a big population boom Shane. It is like my 3 colonies, the Q2 has a massive amount of brood, while my Q7 colony has very litle by comparison; yet they both have access to plenty of food, so the number of foraging workers does count a lot to how much brood is raised and how many eggs are laid by the queen. Oddly enough, my silver tank colony remains about the same size all year round, making my Q2 colony the most successful for population increase.

Well this year I didn't use any heating just room temp. And they do seem to eat about the same, Just a bit shocked to see more or a swarm in nest and foraging tank of around 400 this month, And foraging tank again starting to look messy with there garbage as you said are eating a lot more now with evidence of that there. I was hoping with it been cool or colder this year in temp that there would keep to same population level, but this month Many to in nest seem to like to roost at top of there nest. maybe cos its a little warmer at top, but they now remind me of mini bats in a cave in there nest clustering at top most of them. Its nice to see your colony's are doing so well to woody and how each of colony's populations differ from one another as you keep there food in take to same

Hi Shane, I enjoyed your latest video, noticed the escapee which made me chuckle I have had a few workers climb over the top when filming myself, they are hoping I don't notice! Your up early, or stayed up late; I thought I was the only one to watch ants behaviour at night most of our lot are at the end of the bed so I don't have to creep far. I take it you normaly have the glass lid on that tank the escapee came out of? I don't know how you get on with the cleaning as I know you do it regular, must be getting harder each time with more traffic in there ?

Thanks Jenant Yeah I'm a bit puzzled on now that worker got over oil line when filming but I found out with messors that they like to show off if they get out like they just stand out in open or if lost to be put back unlike other ants that hide or take cover . And some days I do leave lid off for a hour or 2 and they do not seem to like to cross oil line I made around rim. BUT time to time you always get one but she soon goes back in after a little wonder. I only clean them out when foraging tank is less busy and most of colonys in nest . Yeah I watch them at night as they up 24 7 colony and at side where I sleep, I have woken up once or twice last year with a escaped media worker looking at me on end of pillow before in morning with anteners waving in air and puzzles me to be on how and when she got out.

Love the photos Shane. I wonder why all the ants moved to the foraging area?! Really interested in M Barb journals at the moment as I am trying to get my own colony of M Barbs going after a bumpy start.

I don't know yet, but they do like it a bit crowded and I do have to sacrifice some when I clean out there foraging tank so numbers are around same once new ants start to emerge from there pupal state.
