A great video, pleased they still like the chicken Shane. I have some cooked turkey from xmas in the freezer, (too much for us to eat) so I expect they will like that too

Your latest video Shane is brilliant I loved the way they rip the chicken off and the other workers follow the scent up the pipe behind the meat! I hope they consume the chicken and don't leave it in the nest to grow mold later? They certainly love it, it's like chocolate is to us I only feed them a pinch of chicken once a week at weekends and they don't leave any of it
Over "Nov to Dec" I just left them with a seeds diet and I think they got a bit greedy with them Then storing them in chambers they just keep eating them and filling there garbage with seed shells what they ended up having fat gasters which I though they was ill with something but they just got greedy it seems.

Ants always seem to be gluttons when it comes to tearing off large bits of meat, as the worker was doing on your video. To be honest I have kept my own 2 Messor barb colonies down on food over the winter, as they have stored up a lot of seeds and it was more than they needed, making them look right little pigs.

Hi Shane is there no sand in your messors nest? Not any more, they just dug it all out and make a huge mess with the garbage with it in foraging tanks like its trash.
I'll upload a video of nest. as I cleaned foraging tank out and colony with numbers now seem to always get agitated once a light shines in there nest or rush to see what's going on to entrances like mini race cars, But after a bit they settle down. Also its a good way for then to explore there clean foraging tank if they are a little stubborn to come out of there nest.

Hi Shane, what a fantastic journal this is, one of the best I've read. I wish I'd fine the same and had a separate comments thread.

Not too late for you to make a comments thread on this board Deansie, and then all you have to do is link it to your journal. That way all comments can be posted on a separate thread while you just post updates on your ant journals.

The Queen is a beautiful red colour Shane Thanks.
She is very active and relaxed today, Was watching her feed her pupae and larvae. But after 4mins she was a bit uncomfortable with the light let in on her nest, Shes seems ok with camera flash but her workers seem to always stand in front so was lucky to get some good shots of her before her workers covered her view as she wonders off to her roost.

Your red queen has produced some nice red media workers Shane, as while it is common to see red headed workers, some of yours look all red in your latest photos. That queen of yours is such a beautiful colour, which again is quite a rarity among Messor barbarus.

Yes, They have red on them like there queen when they shells start to darken with age from a like wooden yellowish brown.
Queen always reminds me of a tomato cos of the tone and colour shade of red mostly on her head and a liitle with her gaster.
Could name her the Tomato coloured messor Queen
