Jen came home from walking our dog at 7pm yesterday to say there was a lot of little winged ants in the grass. As these were just a few yards from our front door, she picked up a couple and brought them in for me to look at. They were Myrmica rubra males, and there were dozens of these wandering around outside; but not one single newly mated queen to be seen. Either the nest was only producing males, or the females had already mated earlier and returned to the ground, perhaps to rejoin the parent nest or found new ones? I haven't been out to look for any this morning, though I don't expect I would find any if I did
