I remember going on a rally protest march in London back when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, and the then Conservative (Tory) government was threatening NHS cut backs.
It didn't do much good as anyone in power, be they Conservative, Labour or Liberal Democrat will tell you, they have nurses over a barrel knowing full well that a nurse will not go out on stike action.
The reason for this is, since the days of the Crimean War when good old Florence Nightingale started caring for the sick and injured, and dying soldiers of her day, nurses and doctors have been dedicated to the preservation of life and providing patient care.
Because of this fact, no nurse will strike. So any government can keep the pay of medical staff as low as they want; but teachers, police, military, office workers etc. can strike for more pay, as what does it matter if a few schools close for a short time.
Try closing a hospital for just 8 hours and patients WILL DIE

This may shock people into thinking "why do nursing staff need more pay?" It is because the nursing profession is the worse and poorly paid, as a first year teacher gets far more money than a newly trained nurse; and if you've ever tried to live on an NHS wage like I have done, then you'll know just how bad the money is for a job which is hard both physically and mentally with very little thanks, as these days nurses are often injured at work trying to care for patients who have no respect, and relatives who give abuse over the care of their family.
No wonder many nurses want to retire at 55, as they have had enough by the time they've worked 35 years in a job which has become more pressurized over the past 20 years.
If people died from lack of care there would be a public outcry, and it would be the NHS who would get the blame, not the government for their uncaring attitude toward public sector workers such as nurses.
Nurses should strike and let everyone see how much they are needed, but they never will; and this is why this particular profession will always be the poorest paid of any others, because they won't walk out and allow patients to suffer or die from the consequences of strike action.
