I started young too. But not just ants, all kind of creatures and living things in general.
But ants (and also termites and social insects) are more interesting as they live together and take care of one another, cooperate as a team, sacrificing their lives for their nest and common good.

It's all my daughters fault, lol....
I never considered keeping ants, didn't pay much attention to them in general honestly until my 5 year old daughter asked for an ant farm. I said sure, that sounds fun and bought her an Uncle Milton's farm, which is still in the box! I started reading these forums about the same time and decided building our own ant farm would be much cooler so we set out building our farm, really I set out building it while she played with the clay we bought to mold the tunnels and chambers. At that point I had read enough to be hooked.
Now it's really daddies hobby and I think I will be keeping ants for quite awhile. I can't believe how interesting they are!

I know I've posted on this thread back in 2006, but I just had a thought that this page of my site may explain how I got into ants in the early days www.anthillwood.co.uk/memories.htm

I've been into ants since I can remember. During my childhood I spent hours watching pavement ants fight. When I became about 13-14 I had an interest in learning and keeping ants. I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Aged 10 (a long time ago!) I was living in Hong Kong. I always remember being fascinated by the huge trails of army ants (I remember their bites too! ). They would be carrying all kinds of dead, and almost-dead animal matter back to their nest. Spiders, lizards, small snakes, and all manner of other creatures.

I keep finding these interesting topics in this board, there's some good ones here Started keeping ants as a kid when I found some lovely looking red ants in my gran's garden. Was about 7 at the time and didn't know they stung, so had a bit of a shock Still watch them now in the local woods and hills, but can't keep any as the wife doesn't like them in the house.

Do you have a shed that you could keep them in? It started for me when I became fascinated by 'flying ants'. Everyone else at school tried to squash them, but I was surprised when I discovered that the larger ones were in fact queens or princesses- I had thought that I had never seen an ant queen before, but they had in fact been walking around each year in front of me. I didn't actually try keeping one until 2010. I've got well into the hobby since then, and my 2010 Lasius niger queen is still alive. I'm probably going to let her colony go into the garden in Spring.

They get some really terrible winters in Wales, as when I met Jen she got her dad's car stuck up the mountains in a 3 foot snow drift and we were stuck up the mountain for ages before we got rescued. ;D Perhaps a shed would be a bit too cold if Welsh Ant lives in a remote part of Wales Timenova?

Well, to start off, since I was very young I had a passion for all animals and still do. This passion of mine led me to keep certain pets such as my wonderful dog, my hermit crabs, my tarantulas, my terrapins... The summer holidays had just began. I decided to go out and play with some friends around the neighbourhood. It was a very hot and sticky day. After tiring myself out playing I sat down on the grass. Upon my very own eyes I saw many many shiny, dark coloured flying ants! I got up and looked on the ground, there were big ants about 3 or 4 times larger than what I had seen. I first thought and I am not kidding, that they were ''bad ants''. I probably thought of this as there were thousands and thousands of ants resembling an army about to engage in war with everything nearby. The following days I would go out and play which in turn also gave me the opportunity to watch and observe the ants. This led me to find information in regards to ants and suddenly my passion for ants started. It has been two years now since discovering the intricate world of ants and I still think that my interest will exist for many more years to come. Blem12.

I started by keeping a few worker ants in a jam jar half filled with garden soil. I would like a set up like the one Caydenn posted a pic of, but they are very expensive to buy Speaking of him, I wonder if he ever did find any nice Australian ants, as he used to moan he couldn't find any in South Africa. Probably got more interested in the Aussie girls and forgot about ants

That's true, and we don't have a shed to keep ants in, just a small greenhouse and a stone outhouse which get far too cold.
