Hello, I've recently joined this forum and want to buy some more ants. I've had 2 ant colonies in the past (both Lasius Niger). My Mum doesn't seem to like them very much so she is reluctant to let me buy some. Anyone got any Ideas of how to persuade her?

You could offer to help her with the housework?

Hi Sam welcome to the AntHill You have to gain her trust in you to not let them escape which is what most mothers are worried about. This can be done simply by using an escape proof set up, eg an AntWorld type formicarium. If it is the act of buying queen/colony,then the only other way is to wait for the mating season but that is another 6months away, or see if there are some going free. Where are you keeping them?

Hi Samp666, and welcome to the Ant Hill Have you told your mum how educational ants are compared to other pets, and how insects have been around a lot longer than humans; and could survive in conditions which would kill most other creatures. We can learn a lot from ants, and they are very clean and great fun to keep.

Is that the upright slim type set up, or some other kind of formicarium?

I am not sure what the 3D looks like. Do you have a photo or link to show what this set up is?

Yes!!!! I think finally my Mum is going to decide whether I can get ants! After spending all day helping her with the housework I asked her again about it. She says when my Dad gets home in a couple of hours they will decide. I think it looks positive. ;D
