Many thanks, we try not to be patronizing or overly familiar, while at the same time we enjoy having a friendly approach and a bit of fun around the forum as we all love a good laugh; but Jen and myself plus all our members make a serious effort to give accurate information about ants and how to keep them.

Thank you Jen and Crockatt for those lovely forum comments, they make the work put into this forum worth while that goes for behind the scene stuff you don't see too. Recently we have gone through a massive upgrade, and the back end work I have to deal with has all changed and just got more complicated. But, it will be all worth it if we get another good season and plenty of contributing members here this year. @ Jen: We try to treat everybody on an even footing and I am pleased that is coming across the screen to you all, no matter what the age or experience (13yrs required for membership). As for ant species, I always think people know their own local species best when it comes to handling. Information can be gathered from all sources, it's how the information is delivered and used that matters. @ Crockatt: So glad you like this site, we have great members here at the present time. I say that because I have had a few rocky moments in the past with a few challenging individuals, that only an Admin can deal with. Keep up the good work folks, and Ant Hill World with thrive

Just thinking about this, a shoutbox could be a really good addition to the forum- I have see them on other proboard forums, but they are considerably smaller and therefore easier to man.

When we converted to V5 beta Proboards added a shoutbox. We tried it for a while, but it hardly got used and looks messy underneath the forum, so I now have it deactivated. The trouble with these chat boxes is people start using them instead of the forum and find it a quick lazy solution to getting answers. The valued posts get lost in the reams of chit chat, and members on different time scales can't catch up. Having tried the shout boxes several times over the years, I am now reluctant to start them up again. The facebook ant group is always available as an alternative

It seems to work well on much smaller forums, firstly, but on forums which aren't dedicated to knowledge but more of an appreciation nature, because people can just casually discuss. Overall, this forum would definitely be one of the best that I'm a member of, not because of it's size but I really like the way there is a very clear and concise layout- I've never had any confusion over where I should post threads on AHW and I can't say the same with others. There are lots of sub boards which also cover a breadth of topics and my favourite one has got to be the journals- for the topic that this forum covers (myrmecology) I can't think of a single significant aspect it misses out.

I think this forum is great, and very pleasing for the eyes. Since Myrm's ant forum closed down, I've been visiting this one and one other. Keep up the good work!

I would rate this forum quite high, the reason I haven't posted in a while as I have had to study for summer exams.

As you know I float around a lot on the forum, (I have been a member for a few years now) and then go missing for months on end.! I enjoy that freedom I have to come back at will! The forum is managed well and is very friendly. I have received many tips and important information from here, for which I am very greatful to all fellow posters. The forum is nice and easy to use. Keep up the good work guys and thank you: Jenant & Woodant!!

It's larger than most I've seen, and better, I'll give it that. I give a 9.5/10, missing that .5 only because of my preferences: I see a lot of ant species and have no background knowledge on them, as I generally research ants that live around my parts, so when someone says, "Formica rufa", I'm left thinking, "Formica rufa, Formic- Oh yeah, that guy". Oh, well. No where is perfect. Good point, perhaps we guys who know what Formica rufa are should say they are wood ants when we post, and maybe anyone posting about other ants could give a brief description about them as to their size and colour.

I was on myrms ant nest forum ( I believe he has just joined this forum ) which was quite a nice forum because it was 'friendly' but then it sadly shut down so I joined another forum but it wasn't good because it was a multi language forum and most of the people on the forum where German so the English section didn't get much attention and there were hardly any new posts so I looked around and I found this one and I love it because it is really friendly and people are always posting.
I have seen other forums but they seemed very hostile because I was reading this journal and this guy made 1 small mistake with his ants and there where loads of people commenting on it and hardly any of them posted anything positive or told him how to avoid that mistake.
I'm not implying that all American ant keepers are like this but they tend to be more hostile especially the American forums.

Hi, I will firstly say this wasn't my first choice of ant keeping forums. I just picked at random and set up an account and from the first reply I quickly realised I was in the wrong place, and enough said from that place. So, first impressions it seems like a warm and friendly place and a well set up and laid out forum. So I give it two thumbs up and will enjoy my stay. Looking foreward to getting my colony up and going strong.

This is definitely one of the kindest forums that I've seen. Some of them are unfriendly and strict.
