Hey,
If your located in England/US I would start with Lasius niger/neoniger as these two species are very easy too keep as they are so resilient to any thing wrong you can do and accept a wide range of foods.

If I was you I would go for the Myrmica rubra, they are pretty easy to look after and are very aggresive so they will kill and eat insects. They are also very good diggers and keep the nest area clean from scaps.

Hello ArmyAnt, and welcome. It depends where you live, as said above. If you're in England, you can't go wrong with Lasius niger.

Hello armyant and welcome to the Ant Hill One of my favourite ants belong to the Formica fusca group, which tend to be fast, but not too aggressive. They make an ideal ant species for a beginner who may have very little experience of ants.

I agree with Wood on this, as Formica are nice ants and very interesting.

Yay, my mum says I can have a colony of Formica ants next month when I can pay half of the price with my savings.

They are a nice easy species to keep, as my journal shows.
