Wood even made the rhea queen go into a hole and then covered her over, but a minute later there she was, back on the surface and wandering around again. She is still wandering, and will surely wear herself out at this rate.
Silly girl should be laying eggs instead of exploring!

Well, I've consoled myself on the loss of my queen by purchasing a small colony of Camponotus herculeanus ;D

I think this queen is finally settling down, as she now spends more time underneath the rock. However, she also still spends far too much time wandering around for my liking, when she should be dug in by now I have turned on a lamp to give her extra warmth and light in order to simulate the sun. As the tank she is in is too large to accommodate inside our airing cupboard, my main concern is keeping her warm when the days turn cooler, much like today when the temperatures have dropped owing to lack of sunshine and heavy rains. This queen is just about the laziest I have ever kept, as she makes no attempt to dig at all; and I must admit I fear for her future at the rate things are going

Glad to hear that she's settling a bit. Lets hope she digs in soon.

Wood has your queen started to dig yet?? But don't worry, once I had a pair of Myrmica ruginodis queens that didn't dig for at 3 days, and they managed to raise a colony.

I have become so frustrated with her constant wandering around, I decide last night to move her out of the large tank. She is now in a much smaller container half filled with damp sand, and has been placed besides my Honey Pot queen inside our airing cupboard. She has far less space to wander about, and hopefully the added warmth may encourage her to lay eggs. She will remain in there until she rears her first workers, or whatever happens

I am deeply saddened to say that I have just my rhea queen dead I had a feeling that she would walk herself to death, as she never settled down to lay eggs.
