If you have an outbuilding as long as they are exposed to Winter temperetures they will become dormant although never fully hibernate. Feeding protein is not necessary as the Queen does not lay eggs if she is outside in Winter but keep sugar water levels constant. In my opinion a Fish Tank of around 3 feet is an ideal structure for the farm. I use a 6 foot for my Lasius Niger which is permenantly outside set on a wooden frame which using a pond liner creates a moat effect stopping Myrmica Rubra raids and keeping the colony within the confines of the Tank. As said before any help I can give feel free to ask.
