I do have a heat mat now, do you think it's worth heating the nest area or shall I just leave them to their own devices? I have wrapped the nest with red acetate, newspaper and card, also covering the tubes to try invite them in there too. Maybe some seeds in the nest area to lure the buggers out? I would leave things for a few days and see what happens, and a little enticement of food is always a good idea.

My tutor rang me yesterday to let me know that they were marking the work in their coats, I think it has been really cold in there The queen (I think) has buried herself under some larger stones in the foraging area, but I have seen a few ants travelling back and forth along the tubing from the nest but no sign of anyone actually in there. I'm a bit concerned the tubing is too long from each area, I'll upload some snaps tonight for further opinion. Also had some very strange behaviour from the Lasius Flavus; I keep finding them in the bottom of the water trough I've made them (bottle lid with cotton wool ball inside) suicidal ants?! I was worried perhaps I'm putting too much cotton wool in and they can't get to the water well enough, but then looking at the tubes they're delivered in there's a very large amount of cotton wool at the water end so I thought I could rule this out. I should be going to collect my Pheidole Pallidula today and Serviformica too. Yeah!
