These 3 videos were done a few years back, but they are still of interest to those who love watching wood ants.

Today Jenant and I are going up to Graffham Common, so you can expect me to upload more videos of Formica rufa later. The weather is warm and sunny so it means they will be very active, and I now know of a few locations where more nest mounds can be found, so wish me luck and I hope to bring you guys plenty of new entertaining wood ant footage on this thread.

Well, Jenant and I did not find any wood ants at the Graffham Common site, but here are 4 of the best Formica rufa videos I filmed this morning. I am posting them in 2 separate posts so you can see they are not all the same nest mounds and different colonies. Jen did try to take some photos, but as she had open sandals on and bare feet the ants kept biting her feet, while I only had one bite on the hand; and as the attacking ant didn't spray formic acid it did not hurt me at all, lucky old me.

Different nest and colony in these 2 videos. Watch them on the HD setting for best viewing. You will need to watch them on YouTube to use the HD setting.

We were hoping to find alate queens or males today, but as I think the recent warm weather may have made the Formica rufa already hold their mating flights early this year, I made these 2 videos.

I was able to zoom in on the nests so I didn't have to get very close, but Jen got bitten a couple of times taking her close up shots on her camera.
